Thunder Valley was the host of The Pure Power Billet Solid Junior Dragster Fall Nationals this past weekend and the local Sunoco Bracket Racing Series racers stole the show.

The locals kicked off their winning ways in Friday's Fun Race with fellow Sevierville residents Arminda Sutton and Dakota Wells squaring off in the finals. Sutton pulled a .119 light with 7.946 E.T. which was quicker than the 7.99 dial in time but was handed the victory as Wells picked up a red light.

The 15-17 year old final had Corey Morgan, of Scott Depot, W.Va., taking on Andy Bayless, of Clinton, Tenn. Bayless, currently third in Division II Bracket Racing points, cut a .031 light with a 8.188 elapsed time at 81.84 mph while Morgan came off the line in .101 seconds with a 8.033 E.T. at 70.87 mph sealing the victory. Knoxville’s Jeff Walls was eliminated in the semifinals after picking up a red light.

Sevierville’s Chase Sutton took on Derrick Troxwell in the 13-14 year old finals with Troxell coming out on top. Sutton broke out by besting his 8.20 DI by two hundreths of a second while Troxell, a Seymour, Ind. native, piloted his '01 Half Scale down the track to a .034 light while nailing down a 7.968 E.T. at 80.30

The 10-12 year division saw Bluff City’s Austin Roberts take on Taylor Rose, of Merritt Island, Fla., in the final. Roberts snatched up the victory pulling a .063 light with a 9.005 E.T. at 72.78 mph while Rose could only manage a 9.042 E.T. at 70.92 mph after coming off the line to a .134 light. Kingsport’s Austin Olinger made it to the semifinals before getting knocked out by Roberts.

Roberts made a charge to be King Of The Hill but was knocked off by Corey Morgan in the finals. Robert’s recorded a .042 light with a 8.937 E.T. at 73.36 mph. It was Morgan’s second victory of the weekend.

Two local bracket racers squared off in the 7.90 Index finals as Lauren Freer met Bayless for the title. Freer, currently fifth in Division II points, picked up the win after cutting a .035 light to a 7.929 elapsed time at 80.01 mph with Bayless reacting in .043 seconds with a 7.968 E.T. at 75.48 mph.

Newland’s Denver Maltba made it to the semifinals of the 8.90 Index division but was knocked out after breaking out by four hundreths of a second.

Morgan Racing LLC is a small racing team based in Charleston, WV. They have been racing junior dragsters for the past four years and this year moved to a pro mod mean 16 car. Most of their 2007 events will be spent running the car at Shelor Motor Mile in Radford, VA as well as other tracks in the South that support the Mean 16, Quick 16 races.

The 330-outlaw racing is just like the top fuel cars. They must qualify for the field and only the top 16 of the competitors will be allowed to run. In order to qualify, driver Corey Morgan must have one of the fastest cars. He would like to be able to set the yearly record and be the car to beat at these races. The 330-outlaw class follows a yearly circuit and races at nine major events at top dragstrips around the eastern states.

Corey hopes to be able to move up to pro mod racing in the next couple of years and achieve his goal of moving up the ladder to becoming a professional racer with a major team.
